Relative Risk Reconsidered

Ok, so ever since my pre-surgery brush with risk assessment I’ve become obsessed with the stuff. In particular I need to know, ‘what is the most dangerous sport on Earth’?

Is it skiing the Eiger?

Or this crazy thing involving tiny wings and too much gravity?

Or is it maybe hill skateboarding? (which get’s bonus points for the cars coming in the opposite direction)

This one’s bugging me. Your thoughts appreciated…

  1. I’d say BASE jumping.

I rock-climb, which is considered an “extreme sport”, but is actually relatively safe, as the risks are both obvious, and can be minimised.

The risks are obvious in all of the sports you mention, but the possibility for minimisation is limited. There are a heap of dangerous activities where the risks are not obvious to the observer or casual participant, and these are the big killers and injurers.

  2. yeah, I once heard that fishing killed more new zealanders than any other sport (never mind the fish!)…
